Halo 3 players should avoid using the "install game to hard drive" feature of the just-released New Xbox Experience, warns Bungie.
One boon in installing games is a promise of decreased load times, but according to the development house installing Halo 3 has just the opposite effect.
"Installing to the HDD can make some games perform a little better while also putting a little less wear-and-tear on your DVD drive," Bungie representative SketchFactor wrote in a letter to the community.
"However, this isn’t to say that ALL games will see optimizations from being installed. In fact, in the case of Halo 3, the game will actually see increased loading times," he added before detailing the complexities of Halo 3's technology and explaining why the game has such an adverse reaction to installation.

As the September statistics show on Major Nelson’s blog, Halo 2 and Halo 3 are still some of the top played games on Xbox Live. Yes, Call of Duty 4 and Gears of War are also always on the list too, but you’re never going to find an empty multiplayer channel of Halo. Finding multiplayer competition for titles like Blacksite: Area 51, 007: From Russia With Love, The Outfit, or Fatal Inertia (just to name a few), is almost tougher to do than finding a Republican who doesn’t support the NRA. However, there’s never a shortage of players hounding Halo 2 and Halo 3, even if they aren’t actually playing. In fact, this conundrum extends beyond Xbox Live, and into other fields of online services for online console gaming.

Halo 3 Recon
The official title of the expansion, which will be a prequel to Halo 3, is Halo 3: Recon. Kinda generic but a title like Halo 3: Watch Out, The Covenant Is Here would've been too on-the-nose. The expansion is due in Fall 2009, apparently, meaning that the earlier rumor that it would arrive this January was false. That's a long time to wait, but it does indicate that this could be a pretty sizable expansion.

The most popular games among the surveyed 12- to 17-year-olds were Guitar Hero, Halo 3, Madden NFL, Solitaire, and Dance Dance Revolution. Other major titles were Grand Theft Auto, , and Tetris. Racing, puzzle, and sports games were the most popular genres, being played respectively by 74 percent, 72 percent, and 68 percent of teens. They were closely followed by action (67 percent) and adventure (66).

Hackers are gaining access to Xbox Live accounts
Hackers are gaining access to Xbox Live accounts, and may have been for three years or so; apparently, Halo 3 multiplayer producer Joe Tung is a recent victim.
It seems social engineering is the key tactic, with hackers tricking details out of both users and customer support operatives:
The danger stems from the apparent failure of Microsoft customer service to keep track of repeated account access, our expert said. This allows hackers employing social-engineering tactics to call support lines without being tracked. A hacker can then use this information to gain access to a user's Xbox Live gamertag, which typically has a credit card attached.
Access to a gamertag can also mean access to a Windows Live account. Windows Live is Microsoft's proprietary log-in service. You use it when accessing account information on Xbox.com, but users who strictly use their Xbox 360 might not even know what Windows Live is. With Windows Live access, a hacker can change which gamertag and e-mail is associated with that Windows Live account, preventing a user from recovering their gamertag and creating a mess of confusion for customer service when investigating.

Bungie's Halo 3 earned Edge's 2008 Award For Interactive Innovation, announced the publication's deputy editor Alex Wiltshire at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival today.
"In the year since it came out, it's still showing itself to have innovated deeply in what it means to have a game on the internet," said Wiltshire.
"It has the party system, the theatre, there's Forge, which pre-empted even LittleBigPlanet in allowing you to co-operatively mess around with levels, you can share pictures and levels... Nothing has ever put this into a consistent and coherent whole as well as Halo 3 has."

Halo game during E3
According to the rumors that were doing rounds just before E3, Microsoft was supposed to announce the new Halo game during E3 2008. However, Microsoft seem to have completely skipped the plan at the last movement.
Though it is understandable why gamers feel let down by Microsoft’s decision of not announcing the new Halo 4 game at E3. But with the looks of things the announcement may not be that far away afterall.

Bungie says today is "Bungie Day" and has released a free multiplayer map for Halo 3 to celebrate.
You can download the multiplayer map for Halo 3 from the Xbox Live Marketplace now.
The map is called Cold Storage and it is a remake of the original Halo map Chill Out.
Bungie has also made a dashboard theme and gamer pictures available too along with dropping the price of the Legendary Map Pack to 600 Microsoft Points.

Microsoft will cut the price of its most popular Xbox 360 model, the 20GB Pro, by $50 to $299 in the coming weeks, game industry sources have confirmed.
Microsoft would not comment, but a major retailer, which requested anonymity, said the price move will come before the major video game trade show, E3, which runs July 15-17 in Los Angeles.
Microsoft last cut the price of the Xbox 360 Pro -- from $399 to $349 -- in August, in many ways setting the stage for the huge successful rollout of "Halo 3" the following month.

Grand Theft Auto IV
Grand Theft Auto IV sold over 609,000 copies in the UK on its first day of release.
The game sold 335,000 units on the Xbox 360, topping Halo 3 which sold 266,000 units on its first day. Sales on PS3 for GTA IV were 274,000 units day one, easily making GTA IV the top selling PS3 debut in the UK. The previous record for an opening day debut was 501,000 units in the UK, held by Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Avalanche Halo 3
"Blackout is based on the Halo 2's Lockout," says Environment Art Lead Michael Wu. "You'll find it to be a pretty true reinterpretation. There's a little bit more room in some of the interior spaces that should make combat more lively, but other than that, you should find this to be the same map."
"Avalanche is a re-imagination of Sidewinder from Halo 1," "We didn't change the setting so much. It's still a huge open ice field set on a Forerunner construct." Environment Artist Jason Sussman adds, "One of the things about the original Sidewinder, if you were ever on foot, and everyone else was blasting around... on vehicles, you kinda felt you were stuck out there. Halo 3's man-cannons introduced a really quick mode of transport all around the environment."
This map has everything, from Spartan Lasers and rocket launchers to removable turrets and shotguns.

Halo 3 Legendary map will be Blackout
Bungie have announced today on their official website that the third and final Halo 3 Legendary map will be Blackout.
As its name suggests, Blackout is a remake of Halo 2’s Lockout stage, which featured interconnected platforms and walkways for players to battle on. The announcement also includes an interview with the producer and a few of the designers who were responsible for the stage, as well as some screens which can be found in the media panel.
The Halo 3 Legendary map pack will be available to download from April the 15th, at a cost of 800 points.

Halo 3 Heroic Map Pack
For those Halo players who haven't already scooped it up, tomorrow will see the Halo 3 Heroic Map Pack being snapped up for free.
The pack includes the maps Rat's Nest, Standoff and Foundry, and was originally only available for the tidy sum of 800 Microsoft Points when it debuted last December.
Bungie's Luke Smith reminds gamers that "as of the April playlist update, the Free Heroic Maps will be required in Ranked Big Team, Social Big Team, Team Slayer and Rocket Race playlists."
He reiterates that the inclusion of the maps to these playlists is "to give players more options with the map rotations and by including a high population playlist like Team Slayer, we hope that the maps will permeate through the Community, resulting in more games played on these maps in Matchmaking"

Bungie has confirmed that the Legendary map pack for Halo 3 on the Xbox 360 will release on April 15th.

‘Grifball’ on Halo 3
‘Grifball’ on Halo 3. I personally love the game, but it’s certainly flawed. The timing of the grav hammer is something that certainly took a little getting used to. For the most part, I always try to anticipate movement and swing early. If you’re looking for a game where you can get a ton of kills, this is definitely the match for you.

Call of Duty 4
According to Microsoft, for the week beginning February 4, Call of Duty 4 has held on as the most played game by Xbox 360 gamers connected to Xbox LIVE. Over recent weeks the game has been battling it out with Microsoft's Halo 3, which had for a long time been the chart leader.
Guitar Hero III takes third place, Gears of War is at No.4 and Rock Band - still only available in North America - takes fifth place.

Reloading Weapons Halo 3 Tip
The game play in Halo 3 is outstanding. Many of the buttons from the original Halo are the same for this. One of the coolest things that this Halo game features is the way that you can individually reload weapons due to the addition of the "LB" and "RB" buttons on the Xbox 360 controller. This way you can shoot one weapon while reloading the other, very useful when an enemy is shooting at you and you're running low on one of your weapons but not on the other.

Halo 3 Map Packs
Bungie have dropped a few hints over on their latest community update about what we can expect from the latest map update. A new map, codenamed "Moonbase alpha," is apparently "a brutal map to play on, that may appeal to fans of Elongation, but is absolutely NOT a remake." According to Bungie, the map's just gotten "some new lighting and different switches to enable and disable access to various parts of the map." Water will also apparently feature in future maps.
